Classes for Kids

All Big Circle Art Studio Classes are held at Jessica's home art studio next to Blossom Hill Park in Los Gatos, CA. We emphasize process over product, individual attention, and opportunities for children to be individuals. Copying pictures may help develop specific eye-hand skills, but it does not help students to develop creative problem solving, personal exploration, and the other rich benefits kids get from the expressive arts process. Our classes expose children to a range of art materials (including the messy ones that are harder to use at home). We teach children art principles and skills that complement the art your children learn in school, but do not get enough of.  Our longer classes may also include movement, theater, writing and other expressive arts experiences. All children's classes are drop-off unless otherwise indicated. Parents are always welcome to check out what we are doing! If you'd like, we walk children to/from Blossom Hill Schoo (BHS)l. We welcome children who attend other schools... we just can't pick those kids up from school. Wish we could!

Move It and Make It was started as an alternative to Clubhouse for half-day T-K and K students. Now in our fourth year, Move It and Make It lets children have fun moving their bodies and creating art while parents get a longer school day. We give time for snack or lunch. The class time works for children who attend other elementary schools. Each class builds on the one before so we prefer that you register your child for the entire session.

What is Monkey Art? We are calling this class "Monkey Art" as a kid-level homage to Guerilla Art: art that is put into the community to promote creating and thought. In this class, students will make art that shows what kids care about, can do, want to say, and think is funny. We will then share their art with the community in various fun and safe ways. For example, we might leave sweet art surprises in the nearby park. Any 'excursions' will be done with parent permission, of course. Children will have fun moving their bodies, doing active and hilarious improv games, and exploring a range of art materials like painting, collage, printmaking, and sculpture. Children will build their understanding of art principles and techniques while engaging in a fun, open, creative process that builds on each child's skills and interests.

For an example of our first puppet show with kindergarteners, please email.
